Looking after your e-bike battery: ride longer, worth more
The battery is often the most expensive part of an e-bike or e-scooter. A few habits help it last longer. And if you record its health, you know where you stand when you sell or replace it.
Charging properly
- Use the original charger or one approved by the manufacturer.
- Charge at room temperature, not straight after a ride in blazing sun or in frost.
- Don't leave the battery on the charger permanently once it's full.
- Avoid regularly running it completely flat.
Storing properly, for example over winter
Store the battery dry, cool and frost-free. For longer breaks, a half-full charge is usually better than full or empty. Check the charge level every few weeks. What your manufacturer recommends exactly is in the manual.
Keeping an eye on its health
Many drive systems show charge cycles and battery health in their app or at the dealer. Note these values now and then, for example at the service. That way you see how the battery ages. For new batteries, the EU Batteries Regulation also provides that you can read out data on its state of health.
A separate file for the battery
Batteries get replaced, moved between bikes or sold separately. That's why in ValueDoc every battery gets its own file: serial number, capacity, voltage, date of manufacture, charge cycles, health and all receipts. A photo of the type plate is enough, the app reads the values.
